Metamodern Acid Pop Art and Visual Satire
'Short Verses' is part of a Jesus-themed animation series that uses motion graphics to pair Bible snippets with brand straplines. It's scripture reimagined as slogans for everything from cult biscuits and ice creams to cat food and toys, giving the whole thing a weird 'universal cure-all' vibe, like spiritual snake oil but with better typography. The motion is upbeat and soothing but relentless, almost suspiciously so, and the Seeburg shopping centre music makes it feel like Jesus has taken a side job as a charismatic pitchman, trying to upsell you salvation with a free gift. He's also like an advert that keeps popping up in your browser.
There's something oddly cheesy and nostalgic about it too, all these half remembered brands and acid pop art colours, like a childhood you're not sure you actually had. It's simple, a bit silly, and slightly unsettling in that way where you realise you're being comforted and marketed to at the same time. Like a jingle you shouldn't like but somehow do.
