My Creative Practice

I was born and raised in New Zealand and now live and work in Cambridge UK. Many years ago I completed a BA in History at Auckland University, NZ. For a few years I worked for New Zealand Social Services and then decided to emigrate to the UK.

In 2007 I completed an MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, London. I have always been interested in visual art and make work in a variety of media but after my MA I really got a passion for experimental film and animation—anything involving the moving image. Over the years I have worked collaboratively and on individual projects across performance, sculpture, film and art happenings. Some of this work can be found on my website The Society of Xtras.

In my most recent work I have been using JavaScript to make digital collages that move. I like experimenting with and dissecting the glossy aesthetics of advertising, religious images and screen icons. Some of this work can be found on my website xsif.com. For many years I used Flash and ActionScript to make animations and now I use HTML5 Canvas to make interactive web animations. This website has a selection of my web art and short films.

My work has been shown at national and international galleries and festivals, including Temporary Contemporary, London; /Seconds issue 9, London; The Big Chill, Bristol; Elektronentoto Kabinenschau, Düsseldorf; The Kitchen Gallery, Liverpool; Cinesonika 2, Vancouver; and the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival.
